Jerusalem: Haredi education department under investigation

Israeli police opened an investigation within the Haredi education department at the Jerusalem Municipality.

Allegedly, the falsifying of hundreds of students at Talmud Torah schools occurred.

During the last days about six employees, in the past and present, including an executive at the department, have been interrogated. One of the participants even got a restraining order from the municipality for ten days.

Investigators arrived this morning at the City Hall department, searched and confiscated documents and computers. Eight other employees received subpoenas for questioning.

Another development in the investigation is expected today, when a senior in the haredi factions in the city hall, who previously worked in the education department, will be questioned during the day.

Some of those interrogated and questioned have already been interrogated previously in other affairs, but at this stage their connection is unknown. It may well be that the development are the aftermath of an existing investigation, after which tax authority inspectors raided six weeks ago the school 'Bnos Yerushalayim' in Mea Shearim neighborhood in the city, and other affairs related to registration of students .

The Jerusalem Municipality said: "When an investigation begins against an employee he is summoned to a hearing and a decision is made about him in coordination with the General Counsel. The municipality is cooperating fully with the police."

Jerusalem police spokesman confirmed to Behadrey Haredim that indeed the district police are leading an investigation for suspected irregularities in the records of students in the department. "For obvious reasons we can not expand the details of the investigation or provide more details at this stage," he said.
