Air rescue: Volunteers saved life on flight

Saving lives during flight: elderly man had a cardiac event during a flight from Israel to Zurich. Miraculously, the plane had two Hatzalah volunteers, who with the help of medical equipment managed to bring him back to consciousness, and the plane continued without an emergency landing.

The incident occurred this morning (Friday) on El Al flight 347 from Tel Aviv to Zurich, about an hour and a half before landing. Cries for help were heard all over the plane. Yehuda Herzig, a businessman and a volunteer at Hatzalah who woke up due to the calls, went to the person who turned out to be 78, suffered a cardiac and respiratory arrest came while eating.

In addition to cardiac event, he also choked, as it was during the meal. Along with another volunteer who was on the plane, they performed CPR after removing respiratory secretions from the mouth and after a few minutes the person came back to full consciousness.

At first the captain thought to make an emergency landing in Sofia, but after his condition stabilized, it was decided to continue the flight as usual, with full treatment Herzig continued until the landing in Zurich.

Please note that medical equipment is on every plane, but no one knew to use and run it. Had there not been trained staff, and would enliven the patient without removing provisions; the story certainly would have ended differently.

"I attended much resuscitation during the volunteer," says Herzig in a conversation with B'Chadrei Charedim from Zurich, "But rarely do we see the results immediately. The fact I was on the flight was also a miracle as I postponed the flight before. I was the right one at the place right, and thank God I got to save the life of a Jew. "
