Huge fire at Chaim Berlin Yeshiva - students evacuated

A major fire broke out last night (Wednesday) in Yeshiva Chaim Berlin in Brooklyn .

The yeshiva, one of the most prominent of New York, is located on Coney Island Avenue between Avenues L and M in Flatbush, Brooklyn.

Firefighters who were called to the scene, gained control of the fire and put it out after an hour.

The fire started after an Orthodox electrician, was called to fix an electrical failure on the third and top floor of the building, where the yeshiva dormitory is situated.

The fuse box shorted, it suddenly caught fire which then spread. The electrician has facial burns and was rushed to the hospital.

Yeshiva students were busy with their studies in the yeshiva hall, located on the second floor.

They immediately rescued Torah scrolls and tefillin, and along with the crew quickly left the building, while fire fighters were called to take over the fire.

Dozens of curious haredim and bystanders crowded place and following the fire, the electrical system at the yeshiva was cut off. The extent of damage caused by the fire and the water hose of the fire department still remains unclear.

Municipal engineers who arrived, reviewed the structure and issued a temporary closing order. Management of the yeshiva is trying to find an alternative place to study now for the students, until the situation is clarified.
