Last Thursday, Rabbi Jonathan Shtenzel sent a letter to the Pope in Rome, following the visit to Israel in March. It relied on the words of the Talmud that the Temple vessels in the archives of Rome, and the testimony of the great Libyan Rabbi Boukobza, in his book 'Kati', where he wrote that the King of Italy arranged for an entrance to the cellars of the Vatican, and he saw the Temple vessels there. And consequently he asks the Pope to return them.
"As one who knows intimately the tenets of Christianity in general and the history of the Jewish people in general, including familiarity with the Jewish religion all levels, I believe that the time had come especially on the eve visit to Israel - the Holy Land, a visit that topic in itself a special dimension and history, will be used by you for the return of the sacristy, which according to all opinions clearly is known documents, a robustness and real list, historical and other, that these are the archives Kiryat Vatican and control.
"There is no purpose of my request to discredit, to conduct legal proceedings - social, historical, involved in the theological and litigation debate accompanied by supporting documents, in evidence, quotes, writings, commemorations, archaeological finds and the like. It will take too long describing the fact that all those engaged in all the years many experts of Jewish religion on the one hand, and the other Christian peoples and other religions. That is not the purpose of my appeal!"
Rabbi Shtenzel finishes the request to the Pope: " For all these reasons I ask that you devote a little of your time to look for real and deep introspection to the same parties in your heart and in your soul that led you to your role, and take advantage of a special and unique role in this Torah prepare, collect, pack and take with you together your arrival in Israel you the tools - the sacristy, the delivery safekeeping World Jewish people."
The Pope and the Vatican's ambassador to Israel, Archbishop Giuseppe Latzroto, responded surprisingly to the demand letter in question, and his letter: "I received your letters on 14:11:13 and I want to assure you that I have given it the most serious attention. Your affirmation that the sacred vessels are located in the archives of the Vatican cannot be underestimated. This would suggest that for some unspecified reason, the Vatican would maintain a negative attitude towards the Jewish people.
"I think you would agree with me that this is against the evidence of the last fifty years of dialogue and friendly relations between the Catholic Church and the Jewish people. If the sacred vessels were anywhere in the Vatican, the last Popes would have returned them to their rightful owners. If you can provide me with evidence - I'll pass it personally to Francis (Pope)", the Pope's representative ends his letter.
