Report reveals: 200 thousand battered women in Israel

Family violence image of Israel in 2013: 19 women were killed by their husbands or family members, about 200 thousand battered women live in Israel today and 600 thousand children have witnessed family violence - says a report of the WIZO Association released this morning (Wednesday), prior to International Day of Violence Against Women.

The report contains data from the welfare authorities, law and enforcement, an average of 72 cases of violence in the family are opened daily. However, it is important to note that these numbers are beyond the thousands more who live in the circuit of domestic violence, but are not known to the authorities.

It should be noted that family violence exists in all sectors and in all circles.

The report also showed that 12,944 people - men, women and children - were treated in the past year in treatment centers and prevention of domestic violence and shelters for battered women. All in all, centers for the treatment and prevention of domestic violence were approached this year by about 15 thousand.

According to figures collected by WIZO, in 2013 (until September), 17,444 cases of violence in the family were started, of which 11,303 are in respect of complaints of violence against women. 657 of them were for breach of protection orders.

Police estimated that by the end of the year the number of cases will reach 20 thousand and the number of complaints of violence against women will come to 13 thousand.
