This weekend rabbis of the Old City sent a scathing letter to the Mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, in which they demand that he refrain from offending "all that is holy and dear to the people of Israel, by holding shows of profanity and obscenity in the city street, in front of thousands of people, and next to and on the way to the Western Wall, the place of Beis Hamikdash".

This morning haredi dailies published the letter. The wording of their letter: "We the residents of Jerusalem within the walls may it be soon rebuilt, cry out with bitter and bleeding hearts, about the continuing violation of all that is sacred to us and all of Israel, when we see the desecration of our sanctified and our glorious city, which became a disgrace, with the directing Jews to places of idolatry and their outskirts, and woody word to the wise, in various shows of profanity, street parties full of obscenity which are muktze mechamas mius, which one cannot fathom and the paper cannot suffer, which affects our souls and those of our children."

The anger of the rabbis was kindled by a street show which is held recently on the walls of Old Jerusalem, which includes immodest shows to say the least, where Jews march to the Western Wall.

Further on in the letter, the rabbis of the Old City wrote that they are ashamed of the shame which is held in the sacred city's gates: "In the name hundreds of thousands of Jews who visit this holy city, in our name and the name of the masses of Jews who go to pour out their prayers in the place from which the Schina does not move throughout our exile."

The letter, signed by rabbis from all circles and communities, ends with the words: " We will not agree to these performances, even once, and we announce to you that if you do not cancel these shows and their like, things which desecrate the holiness, we will not hesitate to use all means at our disposal. Please be attentive to our plea, turn to our sorrow, for this is a real pain of our people. We do not have the ability to describe to you the size of damage this causes the sanctity and dignity of Jerusalem and its sons."
