On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht, which falls this weekend, it was decided in the Beis Din Machzikei Hadas of Berlin to establish a local kashrus system which will serve the Jews of Berlin.

The kashrus system will operate under the rabbinical Beis Din, and will be called the 'Berlin Beis Din'. Hagaon Rabbi Yehuda Teichtel, rabbi of the Jewish community and a member of the Beis Din, said: " Kristallnacht was one of the low points in the history of the Jewish community, existentially and spiritually. The establishment of a kashrus system, which is a kind of luxury of based communities, is undoubtedly one of the points of tide of the community. Or in three words: Am Israel Chai!"

As the global industrial center and food and beverage manufacturers leading the European Union, Germany has been a destination for kosher systems, from inside and outside it, who worked to kasher food factories primarily for export.

In contrast to this situation which existed so far, the new kashrus system which is currently being established, will be directed primarily inward, into Germany, and will serve the needs of the local Jewish community which is in growth.

According to the plan, the kashrus system - 'Berlin Beis Din' – will act to kasher restaurants, hotels, and factories whose products reach the Jewish community in Germany. The first of these, Lemberg Kaviar, producing smoked fish, recently signed for the koshering of some of its production slates.

In recent months, for the establishment of the kashrus systems, the rabbis of the Rabbinical Beis Din of Machzikei Hadas have arranged for kosher procedures which will oblige the food business owners who want to get the seal of approval. Kashrus procedures were arranged by sector and are transparent and visible to all. "The idea is to produce a very professional kosher system, giving the best service to those who wish to join on the one hand, and bearing full responsibility for end customers in terms of level of kashrus on the other hand," explains Rabbi Abraham Golobchov, Beis Din secretary.

The Rabbinical Beis Din of Machzikei Hadas was established in Berlin two years ago by Rabbi Yehudah Teichtel, one of the rabbis of the Jewish community in Berlin who himself serves as a member of the Beis Din. The Beis Din serves Jews in Germany in general and Berlin in particular, and deals with, among others, civil law, personal law clarifying Jewish background, and more.

Members of the Beis Din are two senior dayanim in Europe, Hagaon Rabbi Yaakov David Smahl, dayan of Shomrei Hadas in Antwerp, and Hagaon Rabbi Pinchas Padwa, Rav of the haredi congregation Etz Chaim in Amsterdam.
