De Belsio is the new mayor of New York

Makeover in New York: for the first time in 20 years a Democrat - Bill de Belsio was elected, defeating his Republican rival Joseph Lotte as 109th Mayor of New York.

De Belsio drew in the elections 73 percent of the vote. In his victory speech de Belsio said: " The people of New York, today spoke loudly and clearly a new direction to our city. Growing inequality that we see cannot weaken our resolve."

De Belsio replaced Michael Bloomberg, the Jewish mayor, who retired after completing a term of 12 years. Bloomberg, who will be leaving office in January, finishes career as Mayor, by NBC survey among residents of New York 47 % think he did a good or excellent job, 29 % thought he was fine, and only 20% gave a low score for his implementation.

De Belsio won the support of the residents of Brooklyn's ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods.

State of New Jersey elected Republican governor Chris Christie for a second term.
