New York goes to elections • Orthodox candidate leads

New York goes to elections. If you believe the polls a makeover is expected today (Tuesday) in New York, and for the first time in 20 years Democratic candidate Bill de Bwlsio is expected to defeat his Republican rival Joseph Lotte .

After two decades of republican office of Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, a Democrat is expected today to be elected mayor of New - York, also winning wide support among the ultra-Orthodox communities in the city.

According to the latest survey of the New York Times, De Bwlsio is enjoying a gap of 45 percent (68 against 23) among respondents that probably will vote.

Not all rabbis of the ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods in New - York expressed explicit support for applicants, but united in their call to vote and influence.

De Belsio, 52, is a native of Manhattan who lives in Brooklyn and has served in recent years as a city councilman.

He was a political activist during the tenure of Mayor David Dinkins who served as New York City area and New Jersey at the Ministry of Housing and Regional Development of the Clinton administration, and in 2000 he managed the successful campaign of Hillary Clinton to the Senate.

Brooklyn City Council representative since 2001 has promoted legislation designed to prevent harm to living in public housing.

Courting Jews

Belsio often visited ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods in Borough Park and Flatbush, and won support for the largest Hasidic communities. He also did the impossible and promised the support of the two factions of Satmar.

When Harav Ovadia Yosef zt"l died he stated: "Millions of people around the world lost a leader today in the form of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. Wisdom, charity and its sensitivity were legendary."

His efforts bore fruit and he wins 60% support among Jews.

Lotte, 59, is a native of the Bronx, the grandson of a Jewish woman but grew up in a Catholic family. He supports decreasing tax on companies; businesses, hotels and housing, and encouraging high-tech.

Lotte also made efforts to rake in the Haredi community support, but has less support despite his Jewish origins.

"I have great respect for the Jewish community," he declared, "I am a Christian; I think that the Jews are my big brothers. Every time I met with the Jewish community, the issues that come up in conversation are identical to what I hear everywhere else in the city. They talk about education - not only the public schools, but also on the receiving unfair treatment than any others.
