Judge: "Haredi way of silencing - doomed to fail"

Zvi Gurfinkel, a senior judge in the District Court in Tel Aviv, spoke today (Wednesday) during a debate – on the issue of silencing in the haredi sector. "This is not the right way to handle these kinds of problems and is doomed to fail."

The judge did not spare words when on the subject of silencing in the Haredi community: "Concerning the Haredi attempts to solve these cases on its own, without involving the police - this is not the right way to handle these kinds of problems and is doomed to fail."

The judge noted that it is not appropriate that the judgment of the suspect will be derived without causing judicial discussion on the matter, the hearing of witnesses and strict rules of evidence and the rights of the accused.

Finally, the judge wrote: "It is hoped that the treatment of suspects in the Haredi society will change and various factors in the society such as family or rabbis, will encourage victims to complain to the police rather than ignore or handle it on their own."
