This afternoon a 42 year old man, father of 9 children, and resident of Beit Shemesh was brought before the court after he was arrested yesterday by the police.
The suspect was arrested after being caught selling stolen holy books which were stolen during a burglary in Beit Shemesh. During searches of his home additional stolen books were found.
A police representative said at the hearing that at the burglary hundreds of book s were stolen. The suspect was caught with a large number of books, trying to sell them. During interrogation the suspect claimed that he had received them the day before from another person whose information he does not know.
Leah Zemel, the lawyer of the suspect, told the hearing that "when a person is brought first to the court and has no previous conviction, the assumption must be that he is innocent. The man described how he walked around the mall, looking for a job, and a person wanted to hire him. At places like this he should not give the full details."
Judge Dorit Feinstein partially accepted the request of the police, and extended the arrest of the suspect until Friday at 10:00.
