Satmar disappointed: Weberman's sentence was reduced to only 50 years

NehemiahWeberman's lawyers and Satmar activists are disappointed: despite legal efforts, the court reduced the sentence of Nechemia Weberman yesterday from 103 years in prison for 50 years, with the possibility of parole, for good behavior.

Weberman, now 54, will be released by the ruling therefore at a very old age.

Linda Foglia, a spokeswoman for the Prison Authority said that reducing the punishment was in accordance with the kind of punishment for crimes for which he was convicted.

Court spokesman said that in fact there is no contradiction between the two judgments. "The first judge ruled Weberman to 103 years in prison requested by the maximum sentence to send a message, that criminals would be locked up for life in prison. The judge, who dropped 53 years of his sentence, did not change the nature of the punishment. Weberman will still remain in jail for the rest of his life," said the spokesman.

Nechemia Weberman, a Satmar Hasid, a resident of Williamsburg, treated drop out youth for nearly 30 years. He was convicted of 59 criminal sections, after a complaint was filed against him by a young girl.

Satmar Hasidism fund was established to raise funds for the legal expenses. Yesterday, with the learning of the verdict, Satmar said that they will continue attempts to bring about the release of Weberman.
