The blizzard and the great storm 'Nemo' that befell New York could not disrupt the Satmar's Shabbos uplifting alongside the Satmar Rebbe who came to stay in Borough Park. Thousands of devotee residents and hundreds of guests from around New York, attended prayers and tishim of the Rebbe, conducted at the great Beit Midrash of Satmar in the city.
The Rebbe arrived in the neighborhood due to the start of construction of the new building, which will serve as a Talmud Torah of the chassidus. The building will contain 70 classrooms, a wedding hall and four halls for other celebrations at discount prices. The building was launched six months ago, but these days construction of the first floor has begun, and on Sunday Parashat Vayikra a large gathering will be held which will be called 'white sapphire' in the construction site.
The Rebbe was supposed to arrive at the neighborhood for Shabboos Veyakhel-Pekudey this month, before the gathering, decided to anticipate the arrival, in order not to interfere with the yeshiva students of the last week of the winter zeman, and thus lead to bitul Torah of a full week, therefore he came for Shabbos Shekalim, on the hillula of the Kedushat Yom Tov of Segate zt"l.
During these two weeks, the neighborhood of Borough Park wore Shabbos clothes for the uplifting visit. Prior to Shabbos, the streets were decorated with a variety of colored lights, and in front of the Beit Midrash a huge tent was established for Shabbos. In recent days, when rumors began to come in concerning severe weather conditions in New York - some organizers were afraid of the future.
Only when the public came from all over the neighborhood and filled the Beiot Midrash to capacity, did the organizers relax. The snow which piled half a meter outside did not prevent thousands from coming to the grand tisch. Soon, the Beit Midrash was filled, and the oppressive heat demanded air conditioners to be operated by a shabbos goy ...
The tisch continued until 1:30 at night. The public went out in the snow to accompany the Rebbe to his guesthouse, with great dignity and honor.
For shacharis, the Rebbe davened before the Ark like every week. For Kryias Hatorah wealthy men from all over New York came up to the Torah, each of who donated for the new building. Overall, total contributions came to eight and a half million dollars!
After shacharis, the Rebbe went to the home of one of the wealthiest men, who contributed half a million dollars – in order that the Rebbe should make kiddush in his home. From there, the Rebbe went to the home of CEO of Satmar institutions in the city, where a kiddush was held with those who have contributed over a quarter of a million for the new building.
The Rebbe entered seuda shlishit about an hour after candle lighting. This was the last seuda shlishit of the known Shvbby"m days. As soon as Rabbeinu Tam came in, hundreds of devotees from the nearby neighborhood of Williamsburg came, to hear the last Divrei Torah of the Shvbby"m.
After Maariv and Havdala at the Beit Midrash, the Rebbe went to the guesthouse, where he met all those who donated smaller amounts to the new Talmud Torah building.
In honor of the Shabbos gathering a new Siddur was published according to nusach Seagate and a new melody album was distributed.
