Large police forces, led by the commander of Heart of the Capital station, Deputy Ronen Arieli, concentrated last night at around 1:00 am on Devorah Hanevia Street near Mea Shearim neighborhood, and on Admon Street, while besieging the house where a baby of two and a half months, member of a family from the "shawl" cult, died last Thursday from influenza.
Last Friday, the welfare department received complaints by neighbors, which stated that there is another child in the family sick with the flu, and the parents refuse to take him for medical treatment.
Following requests, social workers turned to activists in the neighborhood, and they shared the details with senior rabbis of the neighborhood, who decided to take the child from the parents against their will.
Consequently, large police forces came to the area, and social workers accompanied by police officers and by court order broke into the apartment, but found that the children had been smuggled out.
The baby who died last week was two and a half months, and was found unconscious and not breathing. Hatzala drives gave him lengthy resuscitation, at the end of which he was taken to Sha'arei Tzedek Hospital - where doctors pronounced him dead. A neighbor told Behadrey Haredim that baby was born at home without registration in the hospital and the Ministry of Interior.
The baby's parents refused to come to the hospital to release the body of their son for burial. Just a little before midnight on Thursday, the parents met with a police investigator in a private apartment, and then the baby was released for burial.
