'Storm of the century' that hit the Northeastern United States and Canada during Shabbos, and was given the name 'Nemo', begins to weaken. The storm, which claimed the lives of five victims, leaving at least two feet of snow and 650 thousand homes without electricity - is losing its power.
Hundreds of thousands of people in New England are still in the dark, 405 thousand of them in Massachusetts and about 185 thousand more in Rhode Island, the safety instructions in several key areas that call for residents to leave their homes, and governors in Connecticut and Rhode Island ordered the blocking of roads.
The snowstorm was accompanied by winds of hurricane force.
Despite the safety instructions and advance preparation, the storm killed at least five people. Two of them in road accidents due to the storm, and a woman of 80 in Southern Ontario, Canada collapsed when she cleared snow from the entrance to her home.
An estimated 50 million people suffered from the storm, many of them who have not yet recovered hurricane 'Sandy'.
In Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine, parked cars were buried under a thick white blanket of more than a meter of snow. In Boston and New England snow is expected to stop only in many hours, and for now, the only possible movement is on foot in the area. In New York, one of the main victims of 'Sandy' suffered only minor damage this time - relatively speaking. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city's main thoroughfares were opened for operation of 2200snowmobiles. "There is no doubt that we were lucky this time. We managed to slip this ball," he said.
More than 5,300 flights were canceled due to the weather, and many more are in doubt. Major airports in New York - JFK, Newark and La Guardia - closed for takeoffs and landings, as well as Logan Airport in Boston. The U.S. Postal Service also announced the cessation of operations in New England.
