New page • Jews and Arabs in Hebron erased graffiti

Erase the hatred: Jews and Arabs worked together to erase graffiti sprayed over the years on the shops nearby the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron.

The operation started at the initiative of the new commander of the police unit of the Cave of the Patriarchs Superintendent Barack Arussi. During an introductory tour conducted upon taking office Arussi noticed that stores are filthy with graffiti sprayed on them over the years. "Death to the Jews" in Arabic, on the one hand, and "Death to the Arabs" in Hebrew on the other hand - and the police chief decided that the time has come to open a new page.

Arussi turned to Noam Arnon, a leader of the Jewish settlement in Hebron, and took on the task and organized Jewish residents to paint the Jewish area stores. Later he also turned to the Palestinian parties and they agreed to join the process.

Arussi explained to Ma'ariv Newspaper: "One of the things I learned from the police that when an area is clean and tidy there is a clear decrease in violent incidents. I definitely believe dirt and graffiti violent arouses incitement passions and I hope that the cleaning operation we held will produce a quiet town."

Specifically the so-called 'peace activists' from Europe were those who violated the peace and managed to corrupt some new doors, but residents were quick to paint them again.
