Era: Thousands of years they served us faithfully - now they can have a rest: horse and cart will no longer be allowed to be ridden on the streets.
Transport Minister Yisrael Katz will sign soon a regulation prohibiting the increase of transport harnessed by animals on the roads. Exceptions are kibbutz roads and moshav, which will be allowed to travel by animal.
Those who were hurt primarily are 'alte zachen' dealers, passing through the streets by horse and wagon and sell or buy furniture and second hand items. These vendors are part of the traditional landscape in the country, and are a continuation of the profession peddling which was common among Jews in Eastern Europe.
The new regulation follows a request of the 'Hakol Chai' association, which works for animals showing that horses used for transportation do not receive proper treatment, and the great efforts put on them causes them to die of exhaustion.
Transport Minister agreed to the request and added that riding on animals endangers motorists and pedestrians, and causes traffic delays and traffic jams.
