Presents a solution for equal burden, Harav Melamed
Against attempts to form an alliance between the Gedolei Torah of Torah Judaism and the religious Zionist rabbis – it is worth looking into things said by Rabbi Zalman Melamed, one of the greatest rabbis of the Torah stream – in the religious-national public (the "Hardalnikim").
The NRG website reported on a statement made by the Rav at its yeshiva - Yeshivat Beit El – to students. Referring to the fact that one third of the new Knesset members are religious, he asked them not to "move outside the fence" Knesset members who decided to run in center-left parties - such as Elazar Stern (Movement) and Rabbi Shai Peiron (Yesh Atid).
"Rabbi Shai Peiron is a representative in the Knesset and probably our opinions differ. However we have a lot in common," he said. "We would pray together in a minyan and is engaged in Torah, teaches and educates. This is a special trait of Chessed. We need to understand that each one deals with a different side of the commandments according to his trait and inner essence. But no doubt his positive sides are many and great."
He also said that he was glad that Rabbi Peiron is in Yesh Atid, so that thereby they can not go against the Torah and faith: "It's possible that they are against the yeshiva students and say they seem lazy and dodge the army, but not against Torah and faith in general. Therefore I see it as part of the general development ".
"Rabbi Peiron is not an "appointed Rabbi", is not a reform rabbi," he clarified. "They need to bend down to him, they can not go against Judaism itself."
Rabbi Melamed's outline burden
On Channel 7 the Rosh Yeshiva of Beit El, Rabbi Zalman Melamed, introduced the outline of his solution to the issue of recruitment of the yeshivos, which includes eight sections. The spirit of the proposal favors exemptions for all those who are still studying at yeshiva, but when he goes out to work he will be charged with additional taxes - as a substitute for military service he had not done.
Those suitable to remain in yeshiva and kollel for many years, the Rabbi wishes to reward even more than now.
1. The army will accept those suitable. The recruits will be highly motivated to serve and thereby the army will have more in quality and less in quantity. Those who serve when leaving the army, will receive tax breaks and other benefits.
2. All army evaders who are not yeshiva students including the minorities who do not serve – will also bear the financial burden.
3. Many of the yeshiva students who are not suitable for studying long at the yeshiva, and are not fit for military service, will go out to learn a trade, will integrate in work - and that will be for their benefit and the welfare of all.
4. Those who will remain in yeshiva for many years and will study diligently, will be rewarded more than today.
5. Torah scholars, as long as they do not work and are not subject to taxes at all – will not be liable to taxation in question. But when they go out to work, they will pay taxes in exchange for military service.
6. The army will set up additional frames to allow the hareidi soldier to enlist, without fear of spiritual harm.
7. The Ministry of Education and the army will educate youth with the concept that military service is an important and preferred value for all those who are appropriate for service.
8. Everyone should educate that military service is a Mitzvah D'oraisa, a Mitzvah to protect the nation of Israel and the Land of Israel.
