Mark Shapiro, 36, was convicted today (Wednesday), of the murder of a money exchanger, resident of Mea Shearim in Jerusalem, in a robbery which embroiled in 2004.
The Jerusalem District Court ruled that Shapiro stabbed the victim, Shmuel Simantov, over 130 times of which 70 were in his back. He will be sentenced later.
According to the indictment filed just over a year ago, Simantov was murdered in his penthouse on Sha'arei Pina street in the Mea Shearim neighborhood on August 8, 2004.
The body of Simantov – who was called 'Dibo' – was found with dozens of stab wounds.
Magen David Adom paramedics arrived on the scene tried to revive him but to no avail. Immediately after the murder a special investigative team was established by the Central Unit's Questioning Squad, which examined different directions, including a nationalist background, but the team came up with nothing substantial.
Years later, one of the secret agents of the police told his operator that "Years ago I killed a man during a robbery that got entangled."
Following the information he provided, the police opened a new investigation and extensive operations were done to capture the suspect, and on December 5, 2011 Shapiro was arrested. He first remained silent, but finally admitted and reconstructed his actions.
He said he went into Simantov's house to rob him because he knew that there was a large sum of money in his home. But the deceased pulled out a knife and a struggle erupted between the two, during which Shapiro was also injured, but he managed to successfully overcome the victim and killed him.
Attorney Amnon Eitan representing Shapiro said: "This event is known as a brawl, not deliberate murder, there is fog surrounding the incident." However, he said that "there is a result that I can not deny it."
According to the police version, Shapiro met with the killer and the two went together to Simantov's apartment. In the apartment, Shapiro attacked him and stabbed him with a knife he brought with him, over 130 times.
After the stabbing, Shapiro searched for money in the apartment, and not finding it he fled the scene with his clothes blood-stained by the victim and hid them. Simantov managed to call for help, but died of his wounds
