After prolonged follow-up activity, Robbery Prevention Unit supervisors captured "in the act" three suspects as they were raiding a burial grave from the 1st century in Kibbutz Metzer Emek Hefer region.

In the possession of the suspects, residents of the villages Zemer and Baka al Gharbia, many digging tools were found.

Nir Distelfeld, Unit for the Robbery Prevention of Antiquities Authority: "Unfortunately, the grave and the desert fortress were badly damaged. The damaging of ancient sites is tantamount to deleting whole pages in the cultural history of the people and the country, and unfortunately - for money, and dreams of getting rich, many criminals destroy without thinking of the history and cultural assets of the country."

The suspects were arrested in the area by the Israel Antiquities Authority inspectors and taken in for questioning in Iron Police Station.
In the coming days the investigation will be transferred for indictments.

In recent months there have been a number of ancient robberies around the village Baka Al Gharbia. Now the authorities hope that the arrest of the bandits will stop the wave of robberies in the area.
