Argentina and Iran will investigate the attack

Argentina came to a joint agreement yesterday (Sunday) with Iran to investigate the bombing of the Jewish community building in Buenos Aires which took place in 1994 - the Haaretz reports this morning. Israel does not like the new collaboration. Foreign Ministry spokesman said: "We warned the Argentines during the last period not to fall into the trap the Iranian's prepared for them."


In the harsh attack 85 people were killed and more than 300 were injured. Most of the victims were Jews. Ten years after the Argentine prosecutor issued that Hezbollah carried out the attack and directed by top Iranian officials.

For a decade, especially during the administration of President Carlos Menem, Argentina denied the existence of a serious and comprehensive investigation of the attack. After Menem finished his term, the new President Nestor Kirchner appointed Attorney General Alberto Nisman to renew the investigation. In his report in 2006 Nisman stated that the attack was carried out by Hezbollah with the guidance and assistance to the most senior levels of the Iranian regime. Iranian refused to extradite the suspects, claiming that the report was written based on false information provided by Israel to Germany.

The current talks between Argentina and Iran began in October, and Israel knew about it only through the media. Israel objected to the beginning of the dialogue and asked for complete information from the Argentinean authorities, but was not answered.


According to the agreement a committee will be established which will include international jurists selected by the two countries. Committee members will meet with anyone whose name has come up in context of the investigation and question him freely.
