New facade in Jerusalem: "Ramat Sharett neighborhood is becoming charedi"

New facade of religious - secular struggle in Jerusalem: neighborhood of Ramat Sharett.

The neighborhood borders with the charedi neighborhood of Bayit Vegan, and recently the last plots in the neighborhood were allocated for Orthodox institutions, since only Orthodox organizations applied for the allocation of plots. These are situated between David Meretz Street and Mutzafi, bordering with Bayit Vegan.

Representatives of the Community Council of Yuvalim and other activists joined the fight against the approval of applications recently stabilized in front of the professional assignments committee and protested the designation of the area. To their disappointment, they succeeded to prevent just one of the requests.

The opponents are planning a lawsuit in court against the decision.

Jerusalem Municipality responded that, "the assignments committee is discussing the requests for plots allocations on the outskirts of the Bayit Vegan neighborhood, after they were published in the press. Hearing requests are still pending. During the hearing committee members heard the applicants and the opponents, including the members of the Community Council. The committee members also received extensive review of the vacant lots in neighborhoods of Ramat Sharett and Holyland, and included data on the plans of kindergartens, day care centers and community centers."
