"The truth? I never dreamed I will be chosen for the Knesset" • The seventh MK in his first interview

The entry of a new MK to the Knesset building is usually with a great feeling of excitement: "Here, the big moment has come."


But surprisingly, if we thought that accompanying the Mayor of Bnei Brak, Rabbi Yaakov Asher, to the building, for the first time in his life as MK, we will witness an exciting event, we quickly understood we are mistaken:


Firstly, Asher had already visited here again and again as the mayor of the largest Orthodox city. More than once I met him at the MKs diner or near the Finance Committee room, trying to gather one more thing for 'his city'.

Second, it is hard to say he gets excited. He certainly doesn’t. Within a day the Knesset burden jumped up on him, within one night he leaves the city in which he was 'king', for the role of MK in the back row.


But anyone who knows the man knows that he is destined for greatness. Even when he was assistant of a member municipality, when he left his studies at the Kollel for the new job, his friends told him he was "destined for greatness" in politics.


Maybe that's why some people do not really approved of his parachuting. "He's too talented," Some say of him. "He is not the type to be a puppet of the people," others say.

Either way, just last night, at an improvised and spontaneous farewell, all those present cried. Municipal employees, who have known him for many and many years, those who remember him when he was still "small", even when he grew up and stayed "as he is". Asher, just like that.


Just before entering the offices of the Knesset Channel for photo shoots all new MK's go through, photographs deposited in the archives of the MKs and will be taken out each time his name is mentioned in the media, we managed to get hold of him for an interview of a new beginning.
