Disaster in Brazil: hundreds were burned in the fire

At least 200 people were killed in a fire at the club in Santa Maria in southern Brazil. According to reports, the fire broke out during a pyrotechnics of the band playing there.


The death toll from the disaster is not final and rescue activities of the area - continued. The Daily Journal du Brazil reported that the bodies of the victims are yet to be identified. District Governor, Terreso Genaro, said: "This Sunday is sad, we will take all possible steps."


Commander of the fire station in the area, Moiss de Silva Fox, said: "We are removing the bodies to identify them. In the past 40 years I have been working as a fireman I've never seen this tragedy."


Hundreds more were injured in the fire.

Brazilian TV channel Globo reported that the bodies were evacuated from the scene. "Firefighters are trying to locate victims, yet we cannot give an exact number of deaths. People were panicking and many other people were trampled while fleeing," said Fire Chief.


Local media reported that the club consisted of about 500 people. The building which was greatly destroyed is in danger of collapse, and many of the hundreds of participants found it difficult to reach the only fire exit which was there.


According to the common newspaper's Web site "Globo", the fire broke out at about 2:30 am, when a band soloist held a fireworks show and one of the sparks hit material for acoustic insulation. It was also reported that firefighters took over the fire just around 5:30.
