Riots in Egypt: considering declaring a state of emergency

Egypt returns to burn: Following the court's decision today (Saturday) to derive a death sentence for 21 people, after being convicted for the deaths of 74 football fans at Port Said in the disaster last year, the crowds came out into the streets in a new wave of protests against the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood Mohammed Mursi.


39 people were killed in the clashes which erupted due to the decision. Among the dead were two policemen – who were shot to death near the prison in Port Said – where the convicted are staying. More than 300 people were injured.


The decision on the execution of 21 convicted still requires approval from Mufti, who is the highest authority in the country - which gets the final decision on the death penalty.

Egyptian security officials described the violence as 'unprecedented'. According to them, many people fired hysterically live ammunition in the streets and tried to break into the jail - and therefore it was decided to increase the number of policemen who are guarding the place.


Meanwhile, riots broke out yesterday which continues today in the country, due to the second anniversary of the revolution in Egypt. These riots, in which there have been calls against President Mohamed Mursi, at least 10 were killed.

Egypt Security Council, chaired by President Mohamed Mursi, announced tonight that it is considering declaring a curfew or a state of emergency in areas where the violence occurred.


Egyptian intelligence chief Salah Abd al - Maksod, who attended the council meeting, said that the Council calls for a national dialogue and condemns the raging violence.
