Anti-Semites strengthen: Ukrainian Jews are afraid

Ukrainian Jews fear anti-Semitism: Jewish community leaders appealed to the international community and warned against maintenance of the far-right party - Svoboda.

In the appeal the heads of states of the world community ask to intervene before the situation deteriorates.

Svoboda Movement was established as a political movement and became a party in תשנ"ה. Though its leaders deny being anti-Semitic, they periodically published statements on their behalf that raise concern about their sincerity. Member of Parliament of the party created a stir a few weeks ago when he called a Ukrainian-American Jew: "Z'idovka "- a word which is perceived as disparaging Jews. The party responded that this is the standard Ukrainian word to describe a person of Jewish descent.

In an interview with Ma'ariv, a member of the party, Yuri Sirotiok, assured and said: "Ukraine is still a safe country for all those who live in it. Every citizen has the right to decide where to live. We support the right of ethnic minorities to participate in the government and the education system."
