'Abuse video': 9 Arabs were arrested on suspicion of attacking haredim

Minorities squad detectives at the Jerusalem Police arrested six men for questioning on Motzei Shabbos in the Old City, suspected that they attacked two weeks ago two young men, Toldos Avraham Yitzchak chassidim, who walked on the weekend it snowed in Jerusalem, on their way back from the Western Wall.

Three suspects were arrested last week and their remand was extended by four days. Six more were brought today (Sunday) to the Magistrates Court in Jerusalem, where the detention of five was extended by three days, the sixth, a 13-year-old minor was released to house arrest after a financial deposit.

Police said that all those involved in the attack were arrested.

The video, showing the two men attacked near the Damascus Gate by a group of young Arabs, was posted online and sparked a storm. The footage shows the Arabs attacking the two ultra-Orthodox with snowballs, throwing their hats, while cursing and yelling at them.

"Dozens of Arabs surrounded us and began throwing snowballs," said one of the victims. "They played with our hats, threw them to the ground and gave us punches and kicks in the face and back. We were two against fifty and there was nothing we could do."

He also said: "I was sure I will not get out of this alive. I was soaked to the bones from the snow they threw at me and surrounded by so many Arabs and nobody helped." Eventually the two managed to escape without permanent damage.

The boys chose not to file a police complaint because "we don’t believe it will help", as they put it, but following the police complaint that a complaint was not filed, MK Yisrael Eichler pressed the young victims tol file a complaint, so as not to allow the police to claim that due to the absence of a complaint, they were not able to operate.

Following the arrest, MK Eichler said: "If they were not detained, they would have learned as a result that the blood of the young Orthodox is abandoned, before all at the gates of the Old City."

Chairman of Yahadut Hatorah faction also expressed thanks and appreciation to the Minister of Police on the speedy detection and the arrest of the perpetrators, hoping that anyone who will try to harm a Jew because of his Haredi garb will be punished in a daunting way for all to see, that Jewish blood is not cheap. "The dignity of Jewish worshipers in the Western Wall is not possible to oppression and contempt. Deterrence is the best defense, "said MK Eichler.
