State media showed pictures of fire and heavy smoke billowing from the crash in Vauxhall, near the river Thames. Part of the construction crane collapsed from the impact.

Eyewitnesses said that the helicopter plunged to the ground and immediately caught fire. Sky network reported that the helicopter may have hit a building that was connected to the crane and two cars on the ground.

Many ambulances and 22 firefighters were called to the scene. It is still not clear how many people were on the helicopter besides for the pilot and it is not known whether it is a civil helicopter or military helicopter.

Matt Harvarson, an eyewitness at the scene, told Sky News: "At first, everyone thought it was a terrorist attack." He said, "It was very scary, and everyone tried to leave the building. It is close to the M16 and close to the construction site of the new U.S. embassy."

British police said that there was no suspicion of terrorism.
