Hamas tunnel uncovered deep within Israeli territory

A tunnel shaft was revealed yesterday afternoon in Israel territory - by IDF forces engaged in combat near the security fence in the southern Gaza Strip.

The IDF spokesman said that the investigation, which includes the testing of the tunnel digging time - continues. Yesterday secrecy was imposed on the discovery of the tunnel, and this morning the exposure was cleared for publication.

The IDF is working hard to locate and blowing up tunnels, but the stormy weather last week brought not only an abundance of water, but also helped to fight terrorism.

The tunnel was exposed due to the collapse of the shaft into it, dozens of meters east of the security fence near the community of Nir Oz, where the IDF discovered a pit four meters deep. The region was closed for several hours, but no weapons were found.

It is suspected that the tunnel was supposed to be used to smuggle terrorists into Israel, or injury to the IDF through the trap. A few days before Pillar of Defense operation, a soldier was wounded in the same area, as a result of a tunnel bomb explosion.

The military take this event very seriously, and view it as an attempt to perform an act of terrorism against civilians and security forces in Israel.

The great amounts of rains which fell caused the collapse of tunnels in Gaza, and the rain managed to paralyze the activities of smuggling and trade routes were blocked.

Rafah reported a dead person who was buried alive while working in a tunnel and several injured following the collapse of another tunnel.

Just three months ago the IDF force discovered a bomb tunnel in southern Gaza. Engineering workforces operating in the area identified a number of explosive devices, and at the completion of the operation, during actions to rectify the fence; there was an explosion of a tunnel under the Hobbers axis. The great explosion revealed a tunnel at a depth of four meters and a width of four meters.

Later, during the Pillar of Defense operation, the IDF attacked 140 smuggling tunnels and 66 combat tunnels.
