Shas leaders remembered: "The Baba Sali respected Hgr"o"
יעקב כהן

Like every year, thousands of Jews from all circles and communities came yesterday to the tomb of Rabbi Yisrael Abuchatzira zt"l, the Baba Sali in Netivot.

Before the existence of the Central Assembly, three leaders of Shas were invited to the home of Rabbi Baruch Abuchatzira, Baba Baruch, the son of the Baba Sali. Baba Baruch spoke to them at great length and inquired about the health of Hgr"o Yosef, expressing deep concern for his health, and a prayer that due to the merit of his father, the Baba Sali, Hashem will send him a speedy recovery and he will live until the coming of Mashiach.

At the entrance to Central Assembly, held at the tomb yard, Baba Baruch blessed all the participants of the hillula in the merit of his father zt"l, and called out to the masses of Am Yisrael to join him for the success of Shas, and the merit of his father will be a witness to him and his family members.

Among the speakers at the rally, were also leaders of Shas, who spoke about the importance of the campaign in times like these. Aryeh Deri spoke at length about the dignity of Hgr"o, how his concern is solely about Am Yisrael, the holy Torah, and the poor.

He said that at the height of last Shabbos, when he walked to the Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital to visit Hgr"o he saw he was in great sorrow and deep concern about the state of Israel, the future dangers of forced recruitment on the yeshivas, the leadership of the public transport on Shabbos and civil marriage, the permission of selling impure animals in city centers and more.

"All this is what various parties seek and if Shas will not be big and strong, their plot will G-d forbid be implemented," he said. Deri called for the audience to join the campaign and try in the days remaining until the elections to make Hgr"o happy, it is who the Baba Sali so respected and admired. Deri also said that he saw in his eyes how the Baba Sali's stood up in Hgr"o's honor and asked him to put his hands on him and bless him. This is the blessing which we need now to act for the success of Shas.

"In his later years Baba Sali ordered to vote for Shas"
Interior Minister Eli Yishai told about the greatness of the Baba Sali zt"l, and described how he had seen the Baba Sali several times and his holy work when he was a student at Yeshivat Hanegev, headed by Rabbi Yissachar Meir zt"l. He further said that currently these days we all have one goal: to strengthen the Shas movement.

"It says: why cry to me speak to the children of Israel and they will journey. The Torah teaches us that a person must sometimes jump into the sea and not to worry and not make any accounts, and all with total devotion. This is what we need to do during the days remaining until Election Day, think as if we are facing the Red Sea and we must jump into the stormy sea and recruit as many votes so that the State of Israel will have a Jewish character property with all that it entails."

The main speech was carried out by Rabbi Baruch Abuchatzira. The Rebbe opened with words of Torah from the treasures he sucked from his father zt"l. In his speech he also praised Hgr"o and his concern for the people of Israel. Baba Baruch said that it is not enough to only vote, but to influence others to vote Shas and thereby strengthen the power of Torah, the power of Hgr"o Yosef, and will receive the blessing of his father the Baba Sali – who late in his life ordered to only vote for Shas which was established a year before his death.

Throughout the day, traditional Andalusia orchestras played at the Hillulah, and tens of thousands of Jews came during the two days of the hillula to the holy tomb and prayed for the salvation of Israel for the public and the individual.
