Petah Tikva Mayor Yitzhak Ohayon, filed today (Sunday) his resignation from office. On Tuesday, it seems, there will be a meeting of the Council members to decide who will replace the position until the election.
As previously reported in Behadrey Haredim, most likely the Deputy Mayor from Shas, Uriel Boso, who has a majority on the city council - which has 27 members, is the most likely candidate. However, it is important to remember that in the bribery case that struck the city, the Police recommended to file charges against Boso - but the attorney's office has not yet filed.
Will there really be someone to stand in the way of Uriel Boso to the coveted chair?
A letter sent from Attorney David Oren to State Prosecutor Moshe generation, and a copy sent to the Ministry of Interior, said that since the police recommended indicting Boso, a recommendation which has not yet been made, it is not proper that he will take the role of mayor, in place of Ohayon.
"It is not appropriate to choose a suspected criminal, to a public office, much less a public office so central as mayor. Justice must be done and be seen. It should be emphasized that the election of Mr. Boso to the office, and even his candidacy, damage the public's trust and purity of public service to a degree which requires your direct and immediate intervention," the letter said.
At the end of the letter - sent from the law firm on behalf of Chaim Versano and David Sassoon – it said that if the relevant factors will not find it fitting to approve the appeal to prevent the appointment of Boso, they "will consider the need for filing an administrative appeal."
A senior legal official source told Behadrey Haredim that the letter and the threat of filing the petition do not stand "much of a chance." Since this is a public figure who serves as a deputy mayor, "and despite the recommendation of the police to charge him, yet the prosecution did not decide the issue."
