99 million Euros - is the amount raised worldwide to renovate the Auschwitz death camp – Birkenau, Poland, damaged in recent years due to the rains. 23 countries have contributed money to the cause, led by Germany, of course, which contributed some 66 million Euros.
Yasak Kastelanitz, CEO of the association established for the renovation, tells in a conversation with Ma'ariv, that "during the rainy season's the rivers overflow and flood the land, which is what caused the pavilions to the brink of collapse. Three years ago we decided to go on a fundraising campaign, and last June we started the renovation at the work camp, supposed to take 15 years."
Poland itself contributed 10 million Euros, Israel – million dollars, and Turkey, who in recent years has strained relations with Israel, donated 50 thousand Euros.
The concentration and extermination camp is the largest camp of the camps set up by Germany during World War II, and killed more than a million Jews in the Holocaust.
In תשל"ט the camp was declared a World Heritage Site.
