U.S. Treasury Secretary: observant

President Obama appointed Jack (Jacob) Lew, an observant Jew as finance minister of the United States.

He will enter the shoes of the outgoing Finance Minister Timothy Geithner.

Jack, a resident of Washington, is familiar with the Ministry of Finance from his former role as the budgets director of Presidents Obama and Clinton. Lew, a pleasant man, is known for keeping away from the media. One of his recent media interviews was a few months ago, when he was interviewed by The New York Times.

In the interview he spoke about Shabbos observance and respect and appreciation given to him by President Bill Clinton and President Barack Obama. He said they respected the laws of his religion and observance of Shabbos.

Lew said in an interview that the observance of Shabbos has never been a problem in his role, and on the exception when he was needed on Shabbos, he walked.

Lew, 57-year-old was born and raised in Forest Hills in Queens. At the age of 12 he already participated in a local election campaign. Lew is observant, but he does not wear a yarmulke to work.
