Harpaz report revealed: criminal conduct in Chief of Staff's office

Today (Sunday), a scathing report has been released by the state comptroller on the Harpaz affair.

The report revealed the murky relationship between Defense Minister Ehud Barak and former Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, as well as serious conduct of other officials in the defense.

The murky relationship is the background to the affair known as the "Harpaz document".

About this affair, the report states that Ashkenazi knew Harpaz well, was in touch with him and made contact between Harpaz and the assistant Col. Erez Weiner, and agreed to the data collection activities Harpaz performed in Barak's office for him.

"The conduct of Colonel Wiener as expressed in connection with Harpaz as described above, was unacceptable, and was inconsistent with the Basic Law: the IDF, and the IDF spirit, and it did not suit him being a senior IDF officer and position as assistant chief of staff " wrote the critic.

However, the auditor determines that Weiner and Ashkenazi were not involved in the publication of the "Harpaz document", showed no involvement of the former Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Ashkenazi (or of his wife, Ronit Ashkenazi), or of Gen. (res) in the media advertising of the Harpaz document, including the timing of the publication, nor the time that Barak interviewed the candidates for the position, not in criticism that Weiner knew Col. (ret.) Siboni plans to send the Harpaz document to the media."

The comptroller's office added further that "the state of affairs of the murky relationship which existed between the closest collaborators of minister Barak and former Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Ashkenazi, the minister and then chief of staff should have been aware of and aware of the damage caused to and bring an end to this situation. This should have been done to avoid serious harm in the cooperation between the two offices.
