Complaint against broadcast "Asterisk conversion" of Shas: "Racism"

The Shas party has decided to remove the gloves already on the first of broadcasts and launched a blatant attack against the ease with which one can get a certificate of conversion – which Avigdor Lieberman preaches.

In the broadcast 'asterisk conversion' a bride from Russian origin is shown under the chupah, receiving confirmation of her conversion, using a fax machine.

MK Nino Avsadzah, head of the Labor Party immigrants' headquarters, asked the Central Election Commission to disqualify the ad, claiming that it is racist and mocks the public of immigrants.

The broadcast features a bride and groom under the chuppah, with a fax machine between them, sent, according to the bride, as a wedding present by the 'Beiteinu' party.

During the ceremony the groom discovers that his bride is not a Jew, but the issue is resolved promptly, and a conversion certificate arrives by fax directly to the marriage, after pressing the 'asterisk conversion' button.

Shas explained that the broadcast is intended to convey the sense of danger from a united government of Likud - Beiteinu - Lapid – Livni which will severely harm the Jewish character of Israel.

"The broadcast did not say a bad word about anyone," said Shas. "Intermarriage and fictitious conversions can lead to assimilation and loss of Jewish identity of the state. A country fighting against assimilation abroad can not allow assimilation within itself.

"This broadcast is intended to illustrate the unbearable ease with which you can perform marriages under the law which Lieberman was trying to promote."

The broadcast, which features the bride and guests dressed immodestly, was removed during the day from the Shas site, "so as not to hurt the feelings of users, in terms of modesty."
