Renovation of Nachal Zvi prevented the destruction of the cemetery of Migdal Haemek

Cemetery of Migdal Haemek at the beginning of winter was in danger of collapse due to a slow and continuous seepage of Nachal Zvi which is near to the graves there.


The Drainage Authority and Kishon streams, acted to stabilize stream banks and maintain the flow channel, this ultimately prevented the terrible damage to dozens of graves. During the previous condition of flow path – there was tangible fear of the current storm harming the cemetery.


Nachal Zvi flows down – from the Nazareth Mountains to the Yizrael Valley. On its way across the river passes the cemetery of Migdal Haemek - which is relatively on a low geographic area. Due to the rapid development of Migdal Haemek and the surrounding area, the areas where rainwater was able to seep naturally into the earth have shrunk.

Because of this, the flow along Nachal Zvi increased, and when reaching the area of the cemetery - accumulated large amounts of water. Due to the great pressure on the river, it began undermining which caused its banks to crumble, and a lot of water began seeping into the cemetery.

The Authority made a significant strengthening of the banks of Nachal Zvi in question, using hewn stones built from rockery on the banks of the river. Work began three months ago - and was completed in two weeks. As part of the project, it solved the problem of access to the cemetery for civil burials. A bridge was built across the river.


Drainage Authority CEO and Kishon streams, Chaim Hemi, said: "Nachal Zvi is a significant draining vein in the Yizrael Valley. We had to act and find a quick and thorough solution of the problem at the place. We did it in coordination and full cooperation of the municipality whilst detecting the sensitivity due to the complexity of the issue."
