A miracle. That's how people living next door to house number 1029 on 42 street in Boro Park, Brooklyn - where a fire broke out that destroyed within minutes the whole house on Friday morning – defined it.
The fire broke out in a basement apartment in a three-storey building, and quickly reached the top floor. Jewish neighbors woke up smelling thick smoke which came out of the building. Within minutes, big flames broke out, which destroyed the building and threatened to spread over to the neighboring properties.
Many fire forces, police, ambulances and Hatzala arrived. All 18 occupants of the building were evacuated and only six people required medical treatment after they had been slightly injured by smoke inhalation.
Simcha Ernfeld, a resident of the street, said: "There are gentiles living in the building which burned down, but in nearby houses, there are Haredi families living. It was really a miracle that the fire did not spread. Nearby there are Haredi families with children, the whole building was on fire and the scene looked like a giant Lag Ba'omer bonfire . The houses are built very densely, and sparks flew out. It was only a matter of minutes until the fire would spread to all sides.
"Luckily we evacuated the whole block. All children and women were taken to prevent them from smoke inhalation. People were very scared."
