Hgr"o Yosef to Rabbis from France: "I know only Hebrew - Help me with the French"

Recently a delegation of rabbis from France came to Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, to receive his blessing and hear about current events.


Hgr"o took the opportunity and during the meeting y, unexpectedly requested them to help Shas among the community of French immigrants in Israel.


The delegation were Rabbi Guggenheim, Rabbi of Paris, Rabbi Ariel Mesas, city rabbi and the son of the late French Rabbi in the capital and friend of Hgr"o, the late Rabbi David Mesas, and Iblt"a, Yoel Margi, President of the Consistory of France, and cousin of religious Services Minister Yaakov Margi.

The Shas campaign began last week a specially designed campaign for the French-speaking public in Israel. It is estimated in Shas that among this population which is mostly composed of Sephardic and Oriental Jews there are thousands of potential voters of the party.

Hgr"o opened with a Dvar Torah with topical contact and told the rabbis about the upcoming election: "You know we have two weeks until the elections, and there are political parties that say, 'All this is mine', and another says 'all mine'. What to do? A man of sense, needs to look at who is in favor of the Torah? Who loves the Torah? Who's doing for the Torah? Shas!"


Then Hgr" turned and asked: "There's a lot of French in Jerusalem, in Israel, they came from France. I do not know French, I speak Hebrew. And you, Ben Porat Yosef, are all loved, all fluent French speakers. Go talk to them in their language, "said Hgr"o and added:" Look, my sons, these yeshiva students revive the world, prevent assimilation, are preventing any harm. If you go talk to them you have a big reward in heaven. A great reward."

The French rabbis are in constant touch with Hgr"o. Throughout the year hundreds of questions on Halacha come to the entrance of the Hgr"o from communities in France, and delegations of rabbis and community members who come for his blessing


During his remarks Hgr"o talked about funding cutting: "They want to cut, take them (yeshiva students) to the army. Who will learn the Torah? Where will we find scholars who will lead the generation? Gentlemen, persuade all your relatives, all your friends, all of whom should support Shas, those who defend the Torah. If you defend the Torah, the Torah will protect you, the Torah will save you.
