Yitzchak (Albert) Ackerman, a graduate of Beis Midrash Gavoha of Lakewood, New Jersey USA, is the new mayor of the city where he studied, the only U.S. city with a mayor who is a Lithuanian hareidi yeshiva graduate.

Ackerman, who served until now as a city councilman, was sworn in last night (Tuesday), becoming mayor of Lakewood.

36 year old Ackerman will replace the retiring mayor Menashe Miller, who served for the last two years and retires in a rotation agreement. Ackerman intends to run in the next elections as a candidate for mayor.

Ackerman won the support of members of the hareidi community in the city as well as the support of the Roshei yeshiva of the biggest yeshiva in the world, Yeshiva Beis Midrash Gavoha.

In a ceremony held yesterday in the City Hall, Hasidic songs were sung and the American anthem. During the ceremony, a member of the City Council Steven Langert was sworn in as deputy mayor.

In addition, Menashe Miller and Meir Lichtenstein were sworn in as members of the Council.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Senator Bob Singer who served for 30 years as a city councilman.
