Hareidi 'Suckers' tent: calls to study Torah

A hareidi activist group in Tiberias decided to establish today (Tuesday), a "suckers' encampment" in the main street of the city, calling for the equality of burden of Torah study in Israel.

According to the organizers, this is an overwhelming response to the call from the secular to recruit haredim into the IDF.

Initiator of the encampment and social activist from Tiberias, Shimon Cohen, recruited a number of hareidim whoset up the tent on Habanim street in the city center. The group distributed leaflets to passersby that read: "Torah study protects the country no less than military service" and "learning Torah is equally difficult as service in the Golani Brigade."

The pamphlet reads: "We demand that the Haredim will study Torah and not dodge."

In a conversation with Behadrey Haredim Cohen asked: "Why does everyone attack the Haredim who want to learn Torah and to protect the State of Israel their way? We demand that the secular who attack us will also take part in the study of Torah. They are shirkers from the Torah given to Am Yisrael, with no differences between the secular, traditional or hareidim".

In the afternoon Tiberias municipality inspectors arrived and asked to remove the encampment and take down the signs.

According to the inspectors any protest or demonstration should be made with the approval of the law enforcement authorities not only to create media provocation.
