Brother against brother • Halperin case: family struggle to remove the brother

The letter of Rabbi Gershon Hager, Hagers community Rabbi in Golders Green in London, in which he expressed his opinion in the Halperin case for the first time, in a most acute way against Reb Chaim Halperin, who heads the Divrei Chaim congregation and is the figure in the heart of the storm – does not pass in silence.

Since the publication of the letter Rabbi Hagar has received constant harassment by the followers of Rabbi Halperin.

B'Chadrei Charedim learned that most of the harassment is phone calls from people identified as followers of Reb Chaim Halperin. These people dial the home of Rabbi Hagar, and attack him for what he wrote in the letter.

The wife of Rabbi Hagar has so far has suffered most of the severe messages. Yesterday (Monday) it came to a climax, and the wife of the Rabbi announced that she is unable to deal with harassment, and asked her husband to involve the police.

Police, who came to the home of Rabbi Hagar, saw the harassment for themselves - when while staying at the home a phone call was received in which a person called to protest against the rabbi. But that person did not know that on the line were police who were listening too. One close friend of Rabbi Hagar says that the police announced its intention to arrest the harasser within a day.

A source familiar with the matter explained to B'Chadrei Charedim: "This letter was a hard blow for the Halperin family. Rabbi Hagar heads a respected synagogue with more than 100 members, so far he has not expressed a position on the case, and when he did do it - he attacked sharply, Rabbi Halperin's people cannot accept it, it is hard for them."

It was also discovered that despite the early planning to publish at the end of last week a letter sealed by Kedasia Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations in London, which supports Reb Chaim Halperin, he himself asked some of the rabbis to prevent it, as he claims it only exacerbates the struggle and the rift between his community to other communities in the city. The Rabbis agreed - and the letter was not published.

In the coming days, say associates of Rabbi Halperin, they intend to demand from Hgr"a Halperin the father of Reb Chaim, to hold a vote at the shul to overthrow Moshe Halperin, his other son, since they claim he is the one who brought to the explosion of the case within the Haredi community in London, "he caused that 90 percent of those who didn’t know about the case, now know about it," they explained.

Both sides in the case now hope - for the sake of peace and quiet - that Rabbi Chaim Halperin will leave the town for a few days.
