Satmar against Satmar: Badatz 'Yetev Lev' has excuses

The arrow sent by the Satmar Rebbe on the 6th night of Chanuka, and directed mainly at the Satmar community of his brother – embarrassed the Williamsburg community, after the rebbe delivered a sermon which spoke out against slaughterhouses which are not careful to properly check the tendon intersection of the chicken legs.


In a letter released this week - by the court of the Satmar community – Kahal Yetev Lev D'Satmer - headed by Ra'abd, Rabbi Yisrael Chaim Menashe Friedman, the dayanim refer to the charges and explain why there is no defect in their behavior.

At the beginning of the clarification, the Badatz secretary notes, in the name of the Beis Din, that the approval of the Rab"d on the Butcher shops in the community is only from the salting process and onwards. "Since the examination of the tendons takes place before salting, we are not responsible for it," says Badatz.


Then he goes on to explain the halacha about it. "Permit is not in the minority, insignificant and great loss, etc., and by the Rema who ruled not to check at all, so the first possession is (birds) and everything is kosher and honest."

The Secretary also refers to the criticism on the community and says the opposite is true - that one should not change what was customary. New is "forbidden by the Torah. Koshering of the meat is like we did in the old days in the times of the holy Rebbe zt"l (the Divrei Yoel), founder of our community, and we must not make any changes for better or worse."


At the end of the letter, the Secretary expressed the hope that the forces of Rab"d will returned to him and he could again visit the slaughterhouse, which are now supervised by rabbis and supervisors of the community, to watch the work there.


The Satmar Rebbe said in his sermon that "our brethren of Israel, Jews of our own, eat treif, treif according to the Torah."In every Diaspora of Am Yisrael all kashruth authorities check the tendons intersection. In Eretz Yisrael, and all the places in Europe, this issue has spread throughout the public, and only here in America there are those hiding their eyes and making it easier for themselves. Spare your souls and the souls of your descendants. This issue must not be escaped.

"This week I visited the slaughter house again, and I saw with my own eyes: more than 18 percent of chickens are found treif during examination of the tendons intersection. Almost one in five chickens, and such poultry eaten - by five or six people, and are cooked in pots used to cook it and is eaten mostly by Jews – and the poultry is treif according to the Torah, the pots are treif, and what will be cooked in them later is also treif.
