Complaint: the exclusion of women in the Central Election Committee

'Movement for Fairness Authority' filed a complaint against the Central Election Commission, claiming the exclusion of women in the ranks.

On the day on which the Central Election Commission discussed the request to disqualify Shas and Yahadut Hatorah in running in the elections because of the exclusion of women on their lists - the committee chairman, Judge Elyakim Rubinstein received the request of Attorney Mordechai Eisenberg, Chairman of the Movement for Fairness Authority, suggesting that the Central Election Commission in its current composition is itself deficient in the exclusion of women, for amongst the 37 members there are only two women.

Most of the parties did not include even one woman among their representatives to the committee. Just only two parties represented on the committee - by women – "Atzmaut" and "Chada"sh", unlike many of the platforms of political parties, who celebrate the principle of equality between the genders - and often express support for affirmative action in favor of women.

Chairman of the Central Election Commission, Judge Elyakim Rubinstein thanked Attorney Eisenberg for his letter and added that he sees great importance to have proper representation of women in public bodies, but cannot do anything, a month before the elections.

Rubenstein noted that in addition to the two members of the committee there are also ten substitutes, CEO and employees – some in senior positions, and three women who work together as managers of the regional committees.

Parenthetically, it should be noted that the committee to appoint judges has not convened for nearly a year due to the claim of lack of female representation on the committee. The injunction to prevent the convening was issued by the High Court judge ... Elyakim Rubinstein, at the request of the National Religious Woman Movement.
