Have you heard of Purim which falls in Teves?
Yesterday (Monday), 11th Teves, a number of Hassidic Batei Midrash in the U.S., and in Mezibuz, celebrated the Purim of Mezibuz. Those Batei Midrash did not say Tachanun and held a Seudah, and in the town itself they even read out the Megilla of "Purim D'mezibuz".
Purim marks the miraculous rescue of the Jews of the town Mezibuz during the decrees of the Cossack Revolt (1648), during which the city was attacked twice by the people of Khmelnitsky ym"s.
Hagaon R' Avraham Heschel Bic Hamezebuzer, Rav in Boro Park, who has the practice to this day of marking Purim Demezibuz, received the story from his grandfathers who sat in the rabbinate of the town.
According to the story, on the eleventh of Teves, the Cossacks came to town, and all the Jews gathered in the military fortress located at the entrance to the town. At that time there lived a righteous Jew named Mordecai and his wife was Esther. Mordechai aroused the public to repent, and to tear the gates of heaven in prayer and supplication.
When the Cossacks approached the city gates Mordechai the Tzadik suddenly went up on the wall, blew the shofar, and to the astonishment of the frightened Jewish community – the Cossacks fled for their lives, and the Jewish community were spared.
Since that event the eleventh day of Teves is celebrated in Mezibuz as a day of joy and feasting, and was named 'Purim Demezibuz'.
