The Ostreicher family spent a peaceful Shabbos in Bolivia: After 18 months in prison, Jacob Ostreicher, the orthodox businessman from Borough Park, Brooklyn, spent Shabbos with his family - in a sheltered apartment.
The family celebrated Shabbos with special Shabbos delicacies, songs and good humor. What added, no doubt, to the festive atmosphere was the knowledge that the judge who had led to the arrest of Ostreicher escaped from Bolivia to Argentina.
Last weekend the Bolivia general prosecutor issued a warrant arrest against the first judge who discussed the matter of Ostreicher- and decided to arrest him.
The court summoned the judge – who is suspected to have committed criminal acts and incriminated Ostreicher several times in the hearing, but the judge did not arrive. Investigations revealed that the judge had escaped from Bolivia. Last Friday, Bolivian authorities discovered that the judge is hiding in Argentina.
Jacob Ostreicher's lawyer said that he "hopes that within 40 days the nightmare will end and Ostreicher could return home."
According to Bolivian law, the court will have to find within 45 days from the day the detainee was released to house arrest, reliability incriminating evidence to justify the conviction and prosecution. If not – Ostreicher will be released and the case will be closed.
According to the same law Ostreicher was released to house arrest, since the court can hold a prisoner in jail, without trial for 18 months. If by then the court could not convict the prisoner - the court must release him. The Ostreciher family believes that he will soon return to New York.
Meanwhile Ostreciher is forbidden to leave his home from 10 at night, and must report weekly to the police.
Bolivian media indicate that the judge fled the state in a timely manner, fearing for trial.
