Religious harassment in Akko • Jewish symbols were vandalized

Horrifying phenomenon lately in Akko: repeated harassment at the homes of observant Jews.

Some cases of vandalism occurred during Chanukkah, one of the local families of the religious community had their menorah smashed outside the building, and another family's house keys were stolen.

Another resident, who went with his family to the center of the country, was shocked when he came home at night and noticed that the mezuzah which is located at the entrance to the building where he lives – was mutilated and burned. After telling the neighbors, they learned that this is not an isolated incident but one that had spread.

According to residents, this is not done by the hands of Jewish people, but the Arab minorities living in the city. However, they refrained from reporting these incidents to the police, because they are convinced that they will not lift a finger to find the criminals, besides for a complaint registration and close the file after a short time.

They argue that the only solution to stop the phenomenon is by strengthening the community and demonstration of authentic Jewish presence in Akko. "We do not expel the darkness using sticks – but by distributing light", they are sure.
