New phenomenon at hareidi stores: exclusion of women as cashiers

After mehadrin buses and separate hours in shops and clinics: a new phenomenon is taking over in hareidi food chains: the exclusion of women from a position of cashier.

For example, at the Yesh Chessed branch on Shlomo Hamelech st. in Bnei Brak, women cashiers are rarely employed for reasons of modesty. A similar phenomenon was also recorded at the stores in concentrations of Haredim in Jerusalem.

It turns out that the phenomenon has a reason: Tznius (modesty).

Hareidi dustomers who are residents of central Israel entered the branch in Bnei Brak to make a routine shopping. Once they had collected the products into their shopping cart, they reached the payment stand, where they noticed that the cashier positions were staffed exclusively by men.

"We asked the cashier, an older haredi man, why is that so?" Testified one of them, "he replied: for reasons of modesty."

The cashier explained: "There are women cashiers in the branch. But the trend was clear."

"Is this new Chumrah which is replacing the hareidi women even from the bottom of the range of jobs open to them?" the customer asked, "Who knows, maybe soon stores which employ women will be ostracized? Where will the madness stop? ".

A similar phenomenon was also recorded in several Jerusalem supermarkets, including a store in Ramot and a store which until recently operated on Yirmiahu street in the capital.

Mrs. R., veteran cashier at the Barkol supermarket, who spoke with Behadrey Haredim, also told of the growing phenomenon and expressed her concern: "What other work can a hareidi woman do - if she will be removed from such work?"
