New documents concerning the case of the spy Jonathan Pollard revealed that his handlers asked him to pass information on nuclear activities, military and technical Arab countries, Pakistan and the Soviet Union - and not information on the United - States.
The documents were revealed by U.S. National Security Archive. According to the documents, Pollard was asked to transfer information including Syrian flight tools and their communication system, the Egyptian missile program and Soviet air defense systems.
Israeli intelligence was particularly interested to obtain technical guide, which was vital to listen to Soviet advisors in Syria.
U.S. document specifies how Pollard's direct handler, Yossi Yagur, told him to ignore the requests of Rafi Eitan, head of scientific relations at the time, to give him personal and "dirty" details on the senior Israeli officials.
Yagur told Pollard that collecting such information will lead to cancellation of the spy operation. Some of the information transferred to the Israeli action in Tunisia helped to eliminate the head of the military wing of the PLO, Abu Jihad.
Documents exposed reinforcing the words of many American officials claim that Pollard's sentence is disproportionate because his espionage was not meant to harm the security of the United States, but to help Israel defend itself.
Esther Pollard, wife of Jonathan, said in response: "Jonathan should not be one second longer in prison after releasing this secret document."
