Gabbai of the Spinka Rebbe – Borough Park, Rabbi Moshe Zeligman, 65, was released from prison after serving a prison sentence - and chassidim rejoice: "Chanukkah miracle."
A federal court in Los Angeles sentenced Zeligman to 18 months in prison after refusing to testify against suspects in a money laundering case in the Spinka chassidus. The Spinka Rebbe himself was imprisoned - in the wake of the case - in Oldsville prison in New Jersey.
Zeligman, the gabbai of the Rebbe, had previously served time in prison. But almost two years ago, his involvement arose again after the FBI asked him to testify against followers suspected to be involved in the case.
The court accused Zeligman with contempt of the authorities and sentenced him to 18 months in prison.
Zeligman explained then to federal judge, through an interpreter to Yiddish, the severity of the offense of submitting: "My opinion will not change until the day I die."
Yesterday a judge ruled that he will be released after serving nine months in prison.
Today (Tuesday) Zeligman will arrive at his home in Borough Park - Brooklyn, to the delight of his family and Spinka chassidim- who say: "This is a Chanukah miracle come true at this time in front of our eyes. We are planning a big reception in Beis Medrash of the chassidus."
