Rosh Yeshivas Grodna: "Recruit decree - because boys demand apartments"

Drama in Grodna Yeshiva in Beer Yaakov: The Rosh Yeshiva, Hgr"z Dravkin, in the course of a "Va'ad" given to the Kibbutz alumni of the yeshiva, when due to the age of the participants the Va'ad dealt naturally with matters of Shidduchim, said chilling words: "The recruit decree is because of the decree of dowry, if boys go to jail, maybe it will stop."
Harav Dravkin evoked the issue that bochurim at Shidduchim ages sometimes engage in 'trade' around their Torah learning: "A boy thinks that if he studied a lot, he could sell himself in exchange for a large apartment or small apartment, etc., a boy simply takes his Torah study and makes it commercial".
Hgr"z mentioned the Mishnah in Avos: "R' Zadok says, do not make them into a crown to boast with, and capitalize on them. And so Hillel used to say, one who makes it into a crown, will pass from the world.
"Who knows," concluded Harav Dravkin, "If the recruit decree never came about following the common practice of making Torah into commerce and axe, and maybe one who goes to prison will finally stop this disgrace."
